Third Grade is a wonderful year!  We learn about so many interesting things!    Below you will find the breakdown of each content area:

In third grade, we work very hard on writing paragraphs.  That means that the students need to understand how to:

o    Write a topic sentence

o    Stick to one topic

o    Add details about the topic

o    Use transition words for those details

o    Write a concluding sentence that connects to the topic

·  In addition, we are also learning how to talk about the books we're reading using the same language of predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing.

·  When we predict, we use clues from the pictures or from what we have read to figure out what will happen next (fiction) or what we will learn (non-fiction).

·  When we question, we start with the words: Who?  What?  When?  Where?  Why?  How?

·  When we clarify, we think about how to say a word, what a word means, or what the author is trying to say.

·   Then we summarize, we tell the important points we have read, in order.
