Multilingual Learners

Welcome to Centennial's class for multilingual learners. We work with students who know more than one language to help them learn English. We have a variety of ways to support your child. Some students work with us in our small groups for 45 minutes. Other students stay in their classroom and get extra support from one of the CLDE endorsed teachers. Each year, multilingual students take an English language test until they reach a certain level of English proficiency. We love working with your kids and are here if you have any questions.

What We Are Learning and How to Help at Home

We want to send a big THANK YOU to our students and families for all of your support during ACCESS testing the last couple of weeks. We are so proud of our students and their hard work! To celebrate our students, we are going to have a special treat at the end of next week in our CLDE groups!

Now that ACCESS is complete, we are going to start Unit 4 this month. In Unit 4, we are focused on the language of retelling and sequencing fictional stories. In addition, students will be practicing using specific verbs, pronouns, proper nouns, and prepositional phrases. We will be learning these language skills through stories that teach us a lesson on how to be a kind person. We are so excited for this unit!

Lastly, we wanted to remind you that Spring Conferences are next week, February 7th and 8th from 3:05-7:05pm. We look forward to seeing you and celebrating your students during conferences!

Important Information for Families

Based on the home language survey (that was filled out at registration), your child will be given a WIDA screener when they first start at Centennial to determine his or her English proficiency. Based on this information, your child will be assigned an ELD level and receive services from one of the ELD teachers if needed.
Whether your child receives services or not, she or he will be required to take the ACCESS test between January 22nd and February 16th, 2024. It’s VERY important your child is at school during these dates
