Fourth Grade

Reading Skills we are learning at school: 

• Determine the main idea of a text and how it is supported by key details

• Compare first and second hand accounts

• Integrate information from two texts to speak like an expert

• Analyze similes, metaphors, and idioms

• Visualize the text

• Use text evidence to support your own thinking

Things you can do at home to support your child’s reading: 

• Take a walk around the neighborhood and locate an example of how plants and animals interact. Discuss this interaction. Then, have your student write a letter to a family member describing the interaction they observed. 

• Your child is learning new vocabulary associated with nature and the behavior of living things such as: crouched, interact, occupy, perch, solitary, and burrowed. Discuss what these words mean and have your child brainstorm an animal that comes to mind when they hear each word. They can then create an illustrated dictionary that uses each word and provides an example. 

• You and your child can each write a short poem about nature. Then, you can swap poems and illustrate each other’s poems.  

• Ask your child to draw what they are “seeing” in their mind as they read an independent reading book. 

Math Skills we are learning at school: 

• Adding and subtracting multi digit numbers

• Converting from inches to feet and feet to yards

• Rounding numbers to the nearest 1,000s 

• Distinguishing between the place and value of a digit in a number

• Using estimations to solve problems

Things you can do at home: 

• Have your child locate big numbers in newspapers or on websites and ask them to read them to you.  Or, read the numbers and have your child write them down. 

• Help your child look up the population in the city and state you live in and compare them with the populations of other places around the world. 

• Together, write five multi digit numbers in order from smallest to largest.
